The Cre site-specific DNA recombinase of
bacteriophage P1 is a powerful tool in conditional mutagenesis. However a
major drawback in the evaluation of Cre/lox-based applications in vivo
is the time consuming cross breeding of mutants carrying your floxed gene
of interest to Cre-transgenic driver mice. Further limitations are
represented by the number and specificity of Cre-recombinase expressing
